CSG trio have the jump of their lives - all in the name of Charity! - July 2009

Karl Bell, Daniel Peat and Clare Bliss - three very brave employees - had the ‘jump’ of their lives on Saturday 25th July 2009 – all in the name of charity – and raised an amazing £1358 for BRAKE – the charity dedicated to preventing road deaths and injury and caring for people bereaved or injured in road crashes.

The charity was chosen by Clare – the only female brave enough to volunteer to take part in this exhilarating experience – in honour of her late brother, Dale, who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in August 2003, aged 21.

The following is Clare’s very graphic but humorous account of the day:

‘We arrive at the airfield, me emotional, Danny and Karl cool as cucumbers. My stomach is doing somersaults as we watch people land in the airfield, making it look so easy!

Our names are called and we go to be briefed. We are shown the position we must hold our bodies in, like a backwards arch shape, legs together and arms tucked in.

Fifteen minutes later we emerge, me shaking and feeling sick, again the boys as cool as cucumbers - I go for a nervous wee.

Danny has a Snickers….not sure if this is a good idea? Karl eats nothing….think this is a better idea - I go for a nervous wee.

Three hours pass - the sun is getting lower and lower, my nerves higher and higher. Our names are called……7.00pm – I go for a nervous wee.

We go and put on some serious gear - we look so good! – I have a nervous wee.

The plane is fired up - well a man turns the propellor, (seriously the plane was that small). We board the plane, Karl takes the plunge and decides to go first, there are no seats, no life jackets and no cabin stewards – and I can’t have a nervous wee!

Once on the plane we sat in little rows, shaking like a leaf - well I was - we have to sit on our instructor’s knees.   We are attatched to each other with four little clips, that’s it! We reach 12,000 feet and the light on the doorway, (or open hole in the plane) goes green - time to go!

I watch Karl lay out of the plane and think, I cannot do this, but I am clipped so tight I cant turn around to tell her, oh dear!

Karl is swung out of the plane and he drops like a stone, where is he I think?? Hes not flying!!!

Then Danny, who struggles to lay out of the plane due to his leg length is pushed out, again he doesn’t fly either just falls down so quickly beneath the plane. I will fly I think! - He is gone too, that leaves me!

All of a sudden she shoves me towards the door - oh no, looks like I am going.  I lay down and my top half hangs out of the plane, I have black specs in my goggles, maybe they are flies? Then I realise they are fields!!!

3…2…1 push……down I go. I cant scream because I am not breathing.    The speed you fall at is unbelievable and the relief when that canopy opens….. well you breathe again!

Then it is just beautiful, the skies are clear and everything is tinted orange.  I closed my eyes and thought about why we had done it and I was really pleased with myself - even though my heart was still beating like a steam train!

The landing was great - on my bum like a true lady!’
